Kanyakumari also known as Cape Comorin is the southern most tip of India where three water bodies – the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian sea meet. Ponmudi is a small hill station. The hills are lightly wooded and easy walking. The journey to Ponmudi is picturesque and along the banks of Kallar river with banana, rice, rubber, teak, tea and pepper plantations which provides glimpses into village life in South India. Other sights on the way are a small deer park, a dip in the Kallar river, cardamon and other spice plantations.
Meen Mutti is for the more adventurous at heart. Access to the waterfalls is by a 2 km trek through mountain jungles. The water which directly descends from the Agastya mountain is crystal clear, cool and swimmable.
The source of the backwaters on which Poovar floats, the Neyyar river is sparkling green and can be seen in all its pristine beauty from a boat ride along the various off shoots of the river. As an added pleasure, one can try and spot the crocodiles and wild elephants which habitat the banks of the river frequently.
Feed the fish at Edavanaruvikkara – the official caretakers of the Lakshmi temple on the river banks. Have your fortune told by the local Soothsayers.
For the more adventurous, the following is possible at a supplement of Rs 700/-. Take a walk into the jungles around the Neyyar river at Kottur forest (8 kms from the dam). Go for a swim in the tranquil backwaters. Relax amongst the forest groves along the river banks.
Take a bath beneath the Tripparppu waterfalls which are completely natural rain waters from the mountains. Walk on a 100 feet high bridge at Thottippalam (34 kms from Poovar) connecting two mountains over a river and pay your respects to the Vishnu God at the Adikesavan temple (28 kms from Poovar).
