Talking about the history, it’s a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was built in the 9th century AD. As per historians, the Thirunelli temple was once a major pilgrimage hub and an important town during the era of Tamil Chera King, Bhaskara Ravi Verma I (962 - 7019 CE). There is documented proof that reveals the ruins of two ancient villages around the temple. The Thirunelli temple also gets a mention in the ancient Hindu religious texts called Puranas and local folklore. The Puranas mention the Thirunelli temple as a magnificent temple with unmatchable beauty built by Lord Brahma in the picturesque Sahya Valley surrounded by a thick forest.

As per the legend, when Lord Brahma was travelling around the world on his Hansa, he became attracted by the beauty of the landscape around Sahya Valley and descended near an Amla tree. Surrounded by the river Kabani, the island is easily accessible by rafts or fiber boats run by Kerala Tourism Department.

8) Wayanad Adventure Camp at Karlad lake

If you’re looking for a holiday filled with activities and adventures, it might be a great idea to spend a day or two at the Wayanad Adventure Camp at Karlad lake. Located in Thariode, Wayanad, this adventure camp is managed by DTPC, a part of the Kerala Tourism department.

10) Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

11) Banasura Hill

Known as the second highest peak of Wayanad, the Banasura hill is yet another perfect place to go for a trekking excursion after Chembra peak. For trekking, you’ll need to get a permit from North Wayanad Forest Division office located in the town of Mananthavady, about 25 kilometres from Banasura. The trek is around 9 kilometres one way and starts at a point nearby the Banasura Hill Resort. One of the legends states that a tribal person was killed by Britishers during the Colonial times whose spirit still lives in this tree.

14) Ancient Jain Temple

Once a religious place, the Jain temple was invaded and used to store ammunition by Tipu Sultan’s army during their attacks on Wayanad.

Talking about the temple’s architecture, it was built with huge granite pillars which were extensively carved into various designs such as the Tirthankara, floral designs, sarpabandha, etc. Although the outside of the temple is mostly plain, the insides were carved heavily. The temple has a mandapa right in front of the main structure, which is surrounded by pillars but without any rooftop. It is called the Namaskar Mandapa. The main structure, however, features a mukhmandapa, a mahamandapa, and an inner sanctum. The inner sanctum, surprisingly, has no statue placed on the main seat.
