The City Palace was built around 1729 and is home to a cluster of palaces like Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the City Palace is a must-visit among places to visit in Jaipur. It is not just a palace but a complex. Situated in the heart of the old city, the architecture bears strong Rajasthani and Mughal influences. The walls are adorned with mirrors, murals, and intricate latticework.
The Diwan-i-Khaas that served as an audience venue for the royalty and the Diwan-i-Aam for the common folk are two major attractions. A museum within the complex sheds light on traditional attire, weaponry, etc. of the past. Even today the royal families of Jaipur are associated with this historically prominent palace that was also the official residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II.
One of the most important landmarks in the city, the Hawa Mahal or the ‘Palace of Winds’ was built in 1799 by Maharaj Sawai Pratap Singh. The beautiful honeycomb-like structure has 950-odd windows (‘jharokas’), replete with balconies. Adding to the mystique is the red-and-pink sandstone that gives the structure its unique colour. This five-storey Jaipur palace also houses a small museum.
The purpose behind building this unique structure was to provide a vantage point for women to watch the happenings of the city below without the need to step into public view, as they were forbidden to do so. The intricate architecture appears stunning in the evening and the innumerable windows ensure that a strong breeze or ‘hawa’ blows through the palace.
The Amber Palace, set upon a sprawling hillside, is about a half-hour away from the Hawa Mahal. Built by Maharaja Man Singh during the 16th century, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The vast palace is constructed with pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble. It is divided into four large segments with large courtyards. Other sections include the Zanana (for the ladies), the King’s chambers, and the Sheesh Mahal.
Interestingly, there are underground tunnels here that claim to connect the place to Jaigarh Fort. The fort and palace are a pleasure to visit. Jaipur tourism also conducts light-and-sound shows as attractions for tourists.
As a symbol of love towards his beloved wife, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built Rajmahal Palace for her in 1729. Due to various political reasons, this palace lost its importance and served as a mere guesthouse. It is said that, a century later, Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II moved his residence from Rambagh Palace to Rajmahal Palace, bringing it back into prominence and restoring its glory. Over the years, this palace has had many royal celebrity visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II and the Shah of Iran.
As the name suggests, Jal Mahal is situated in the centre of a lake called Man Sagar. Though it’s a five-storey building, only one is visible – the remaining four are submerged under water. For preservation purposes, entry to Jal Mahal is prohibited, but tourists can enjoy the beautifully lit palace with a relaxing evening stroll along the walkways.
A popular tourist spot in Jaipur is Samode Palace, which boasts of a rich fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Whether it’s the opulently decorated Durbar Hall or the hall of mirrors, Sheesh Mahal, the Indo-Saracenic architectural marvel is full of ornate carvings on its walls and ceilings that will leave you mesmerised.
