  • April-May: Cold but starting to warm up; snow begins to melt.
  • June-August: Pleasant weather, ideal for visiting. Temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C.
  • September-October: Starts to cool again, with fall colours in full display.
  • November-December: Begins to get very cold, gearing up for winter

Best time to Visit Gurez Valley 

You can visit this place throughout the year, however, the best time to visit Gurez Valley is between April and September. The weather during this time is soothing and pleasant; the average temperature in April is about 15-20 degrees Celsius, which makes it an ideal condition to explore the place, clicking pictures and indulging in adventure activities.

How to reach Gurez Valley?

By Air:

  • Nearest Airport: The nearest major airport is Srinagar Airport.
  • From the Airport: From Srinagar, you can hire a taxi or catch a local bus to Bandipora, which is the gateway to Gurez Valley.

By Road:

  • From Srinagar to Bandipora: The road journey from Srinagar to Bandipora takes about 3 hours and covers around 65 km.
  • Bandipora to Gurez: From Bandipora, it's a scenic but challenging drive to Gurez Valley via the Razdan Pass. The distance is about 83 km and can take 4-5 hours depending on road conditions and weather.

By Rail:

  • Nearest Railway Station: The nearest railway station to Srinagar is at Banihal, which is connected by rail to Jammu. Jammu itself is well-connected to major Indian cities.
  • Rail to Road: From the Banihal railway station, you can take a road transport (bus or taxi) to Srinagar, and then proceed to Bandipora and onward to Gurez as described under road travel.

Places to see in Gurez Valley

  • Razdan Pass- Razdan Pass, often snow clad, is a high mountain pass at an elevation of around 3,300 m (11,000 ft), offering panoramic views and serving as the gateway to the beautiful Gurez Valley. 
  • Peer Baba Shrine- Located en route to Gurez Valley, the Peer Baba Shrine is a revered site, frequented by travellers seeking blessings. It's a symbol of the rich spiritual heritage of the region and a place of solace amidst the serene mountain scenery.
  • Habba Khatoon Peak- Named after the famous poetess of Kashmir, Habba Khatoon Peak is a striking pyramid-shaped mountain that dominates the skyline of Gurez Valley. At an altitude of 13,000ft, it is popular among trekkers and serves as a stunning backdrop for the valley.
  • Tulail valley- Tulail Valley is a less explored sub-valley of Gurez, known for its lush meadows, pastoral scenes, and traditional lifestyles of the nomadic communities. It offers a glimpse into the rural and untouched natural beauty of Kashmir.
  • Wular Lake- One of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, Wular Lake is situated near Sopore and is known for its size and the diversity of its aquatic life. The lake is a vital source for fishing and water sports in the region. 
  • Dawar- Dawar is the principal town in Gurez Valley, serving as a cultural and administrative centre. It is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges and is known for its vibrant local markets and traditional wooden architecture. 

Things to do in Gurez Valley 

Throughout the year many festivals and events take place in and around the valley. So, depending on what time of the year you are visiting this place, you would have plenty of things to do that would keep you entertained.  

If you are visiting the valley during July or August, you can witness the Gurez Festival. It is a three-day event during which you can see dance performances, people singing folk songs and there are also many adventure events conducted.

Day 1: 

Srinagar to Bandipora

Arrival in Srinagar. Drive to Bandipora (3 hours), prepare for trek. Stay Overnight in Bandipora.

Day 2: 

Bandipora to Dawar via Razdan Pass

Drive to Razdan Pass, then descend into Gurez Valley. Arrive in Dawar, explore the town. Stay overnight in Dawar.

Day 3: 

Explore Dawar

Local sightseeing and cultural exploration. Do activities like fishing or short hikes. Stay overnight in Dawar.

Day 4: 

Dawar to Tulail Valley

Trek to Tulail, enjoy the remote landscapes, set up camp and interact with locals. Stay overnight in Tulail Valley.

Day 5: 

Relaxation in Tulail Valley

Morning trek to Habba Khatoon Peak. Return to Dawar in the afternoon. Stay overnight in Dawar.

Tips for Trek 

  1. Carry photo identity card with yourself. While there are no permits required for the trek, you will be asked for your photo IDs at various army checkpoints.
  2. Pack appropriately for warm clothes, sunglasses and gloves, socks and rainwear.
  3. Carry an emergency first aid kit with you.
  4. Stay alert of weather conditions before and during the trek.
  5. Be respectful to the local cultures and mindful of the environment.
