The recognition makes Kanger Valley India’s latest nomination for the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List 

In a significant boost to India's natural heritage, Kanger Valley National Park in Chhattisgarh has been added to the UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites. This national park is one of central India's most ecologically significant regions known for its rich biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and unique limestone caves.

Nestled in the Bastar district, the 200 square kilometer Kanger Valley is famous for its dense woodland and diverse wildlife. More than 15 underground caves including the well-known Kotumsar, Dandak, and Kailash caves add to the beauty of the National Park. The park is also home to the Kanger River, which enhances its picturesque charm and homes a variety of flora and fauna.

Over 200 bird species and 140 types of butterflies can be found in Kanger Valley National Park. Recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, the park shelters several endangered species, including the Bastar Hill Myna (state bird of Chhattisgarh) and the Indian mouse deer. Leopards, sloth bears, Indian wolves, and giant squirrels are also spotted here.  It is also a vital habitat for various reptiles and amphibians making it a paradise for nature lovers and researchers alike.

Joining the UNESCO tentative list is a crucial step toward gaining full World Heritage Site status. This recognition will not only boost conservation efforts but also enhance eco-tourism in the region. Authorities plan to strengthen sustainable tourism initiatives, generate employment, and aid local communities while ensuring the park’s delicate ecosystem remains protected.

With its pristine beauty, cultural significance, and ecological importance, Kanger Valley’s inclusion in the UNESCO tentative list marks a proud moment for Chhattisgarh. This milestone is expected to attract global attention, further establishing the park as a premier eco-tourism and conservation hotspot in India.
