In a historic development, the first-ever direct train service connecting Katra, the base camp of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji shrine, to Baramulla will be inaugurated on April 19

Vande bharat train direct to kashmir

This milestone marks a significant step in integrating Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India’s railway network. The launch ceremony will take place at Katra, signifying the culmination of a decades-long effort to establish direct rail connectivity to Kashmir.

The train service, operating on the Katra-Baramulla route, will bridge the gap in railway services within the Valley. Currently, train operations are limited to the Sangaldan-Baramulla section, with long-distance trains terminating at Katra. This new service will enable passengers to travel directly to Kashmir by train for the first time.

Key Route Details:

  • Initial Route: Katra to Baramulla
  • Future Extension: Service to originate from Jammu once station upgrades are complete
  • Project: Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL)
  • Infrastructure: The 272-km USBRL project includes 38 tunnels, with the longest being T-49 at 12.75 km, making it India’s lengthiest transportation tunnel.

Initially, the Vande Bharat Express will operate between Katra and Baramulla. Following the completion of expansion work at Jammu Railway Station later this year, the service will be extended to originate from Jammu instead of Katra. Currently, no direct trains connect Delhi or other major cities to Kashmir. Passengers must change trains at Katra, and later at Jammu, until full through-services become operational.

The USBRL project has been under phased commissioning since 2009. The final 17-kilometer section between Reasi and Katra was completed three months ago, allowing for successful trial runs. This project includes some of the most challenging railway infrastructure in the country, including the iconic Chenab Bridge, now recognized as the highest railway bridge in the world.

The launch of this new rail link is expected to boost tourism, enhance accessibility, and further integrate the region with India’s transportation network. Additionally, the improved connectivity is anticipated to enhance the travel experience for visitors while fostering economic growth through faster and more efficient transportation of goods and services.
