Indian Railways has increased the number of lower berths reserved for senior citizens, women traveling alone or with children, and specially-abled passengers.
In a bid to enhance passenger convenience, Indian Railways has reinforced its lower berth reservation quota for senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, pregnant women, and specially-abled passengers. The initiative aims to provide a more comfortable travel experience for those who may have difficulty accessing upper berths.
Previously, the limited number of reserved lower berths often led to inconvenience, with passengers having to request seat exchanges or struggle with climbing. This move eliminates such difficulties, providing a more seamless travel experience
As per the latest provisions, eligible passengers are automatically allotted lower berths, subject to availability, even if they do not make a specific request during ticket booking.
Under the updated quota system:
Additionally, a dedicated reservation quota for Persons with Disabilities is applicable across all Mail/Express trains, including premium services like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. This quota is available irrespective of whether the passenger avails concession benefits or not.
For specially-abled passengers, the reservation quota includes:
The allocation of these berths depends on the number of coaches in a train, ensuring maximum convenience for passengers. With this move, Indian Railways continues its commitment to making train travel more accessible, inclusive, and passenger-friendly.
Additionally, the Railways continue to offer concessions for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, making train travel more affordable. This expansion in lower berth availability is expected to benefit millions of passengers across India, especially during peak travel seasons.
With this latest step, Indian Railways reiterates its commitment to passenger comfort and safety, ensuring that travelers have a hassle-free journey
