Parihaspora Archaeological Site in Baramulla goes under restoration as per the initiative laid by the government of Jammu & Kashmir.
The government of Jammu and Kashmir has unveiled a comprehensive plan to develop the Parihaspora Archaeological Site in Baramulla as a key heritage tourism destination. This initiative is part of a larger effort to boost cultural tourism and preserve the region's rich historical legacy.
Parihaspora, also known as Parihaspur or Paraspore, is a historic town situated approximately 22 kilometers (14 miles) northwest of Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley. Perched on a plateau overlooking the Jhelum River, it was once the capital of Kashmir during the reign of King Lalitaditya Muktapida in the 8th century.
A home to ancient Buddhist and Hindu ruins, the site features remnants of grand stupas, temples, and a palace complex, offering a glimpse into Kashmir’s glorious past. Despite its historical significance, the site has remained relatively underdeveloped in terms of tourism infrastructure.
Under the new initiative, the Jammu & Kashmir government plans to enhance visitor facilities, including improved access roads, guided tour services, and interpretive signage. The project will also focus on conservation efforts to protect the site from environmental damage and encroachments.
To attract both domestic and international tourists, the administration is collaborating with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and tourism stakeholders to promote Parihaspora through digital campaigns and heritage circuits.
Officials have been directed to oversee the development work, ensuring timely execution while maintaining the site's historical integrity. They believe that the revival of Parihaspora as a major heritage attraction will contribute to local economic growth by generating employment and boosting nearby businesses.
With a renewed focus on heritage tourism, Jammu and Kashmir aim to position Parihaspora as a must-visit destination, celebrating the region’s unique historical and cultural identity.
