In a remarkable shift in tourist preferences, Qutub Minar has surpassed Agra Fort to become the second most visited monument by foreign tourists in 2023-24.

The latest data released by the Ministry of Tourism highlights a significant surge in international visitors to the iconic Delhi landmark, reflecting a growing appreciation for its historical and architectural grandeur.

Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an imposing structure that dates back to the 13th century. Standing at 73 meters tall, it is the tallest brick minaret in the world and is a prime example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Its intricate carvings and inscriptions have long been a source of fascination for historians and tourists alike.

The Agra Fort, located close to the Taj Mahal has been a leading attraction But recently, Qutub Minar saw a remarkable 90.9 percent year-on-year increase in foreign visitors, totaling 220,017, and a 73.1 percent boost in domestic visitors, reaching 3.12 million.

The shift in visitor numbers can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the enhanced focus on infrastructure and facilities around Qutub Minar has significantly improved the tourist experience. The introduction of new attractions such as an amazing laser light show held in the evenings, guided tours, informative displays, and better amenities have made the site more accessible and engaging for international visitors.

Secondly, Delhi's position as a major international gateway to India has played a crucial role. With a multitude of flights connecting the city to various parts of the world, Qutub Minar benefits from the capital's robust connectivity. The ease of access has encouraged more tourists to include it in their itineraries, often as a starting point for exploring India's rich cultural heritage.

In comparison, Agra Fort, while still immensely popular, saw a slight decline in foreign visitors. This shift is caused due to negligence in upkeep, the absence of cafes and shopping outlets, and mostly owing to closures of key attractions like the Sheesh Mahal.

There has been an 18 percent decrease in domestic visitors visiting the Agra Fort, totaling 1.41 million, as many tourists opt to focus solely on the nearby Taj Mahal, India's most visited monument.

These factors do not diminish the fort’s historical significance but rather highlight a changing trend in tourist preferences. Agra Fort remains a monumental attraction with its stunning architecture and historical importance, but Qutub Minar's rising prominence showcases the dynamic nature of tourism patterns.

Overall this shift throws light upon the fact that the efforts to maintain and enhance these sites are crucial to sustaining their appeal to international visitors. As Qutub Minar ascends in popularity, it underscores the diverse and rich cultural tapestry that India offers to the world.
