The Basilica of Bom Jesus, a catholic basilica, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and pilgrimage centre. It presents a serene yet striking blend of Baroque and Renaissance architectural styles. The atmosphere of the place is deeply historical and filled with awe-inspiring decorations. There is a peaceful quiet that surrounds the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier.
St. Francis Xavier, a key figure in the
Jesuit order, dedicated his life to missionary work across Asia. He passed away
on December 3, 1552, in China, and his body, remarkably preserved, was later
transferred to Goa. His remains are enshrined in the basilica and exposed for
veneration every ten years, reflecting his enduring legacy in the region.
Construction of the Basilica began on November 24, 1594, and it was consecrated on May 15, 1605. The church was funded by the captain of Cochin and Ormuz, Herorino Mascarenhas, and dedicated to 'Bom Jesus' meaning 'Good Jesus'. It reflects the historical and cultural confluence of the East and the West, marking a significant period in colonial history.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus, over 400 years old, houses the marble and precious stone inlaid floor, simple interiors aside from its ornate altars, and a prominent statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The main altar features a depiction of the Last Supper and the Jesuit emblem, radiating above which is the Holy Trinity. The basilica also contains a mausoleum with St. Francis Xavier’s silver casket, designed by Giovanni Battista Foggini, showcasing his relics every ten years. An art gallery within the basilica displays works by Goan painter Dom Martin.
The ideal time to visit the Basilica is from November to February when the weather is pleasant. Notably, the exposition of St. Francis Xavier's relics, which occurs every ten years (previously in 2024-25), attracts thousands of pilgrims.
