The impressive Olavinlinna Castle, of Saint Olaf, sits on a small island in Lake Saimaa. It was built in the year 1475 by Swedish nobleman Erik Axelsson Tott. The grand façade consists of a citadel, a bailey and five round canon towers, making it one of the most contemporary fortresses of its time. Additionally, it is the northernmost medieval stone fortress that still stands! This heritage structure has witnessed many battles, conquests and changes in ownership, as can be seen in its varying architecture. It was a former border line fortress and army base for the famous Russian Generalissimo, Alexander Suvorov. Steeped in tales and history, wouldn’t you like to visit this site for yourself?
