Step into the mysterious, mythical Pandavleni Caves in Nasik. It is one of the many historical places to visit in Maharashtra. These olden caves were built on the Trirashmi Hill, approximately 3,004 ft above sea level. Discover a collection of 24 rock-cut caves that were carved between the 1st and 3rd century BC. Contrary to what you may think, these caves have nothing to do with the Pandava characters from the Hindu epic, Mahabharata. In actuality, they are a holy Buddhist site. Each cave is exemplary, and a fine example of the craftsmanship of that time.
Most of the caves have beautiful idols of Buddha and several Jain Tirthankaras on display. In particular, Caves 3, 10 and 18 are particularly exquisite for their intricate designs, carvings, and patterns. Take a moment to inspect the walls, embellished with spectacular sculptures. Additionally, the caves have an excellent water system in place, with skilfully chiselled water tanks, expertly carved into the rocks.
When exploring the Pandavleni Caves, wear comfortable shoes, with a firm grip. Make sure to carry your smartphone or camera, as there are many photo-ops. Most importantly, keep your eyes wide open and listen to your tour guide carefully.
