However, it does have another claim to fame, the old Mahabaleshwar temple. Visit the old Mahabaleshwar temple where Shiva’s Bed, Damru and Trishul are supposedly stored and you’ll see why paying your respects here is one of the best things to do in Mahabaleshwar, for the spiritually inclined.
The Old Mahabaleshwar Temple is one of the most sacred temples in India. It was built in the 16th century during the reign of the Marathas and is a prime example of the Hemdant style of architecture, from that era. Surrounded by a series of intricately carved walls, the inner part of the temple houses the sanctum sanctorum containing the idol of Shiva and a 6-feet tall Shivling. It also holds carved stone relics that resemble Shiva’s Damru, Bed and Trishul, leading many to believe that this was the abode of the deity. There are also intricate carvings of Shiva’s sacred bull, Nandi, and the sculpture of his devotee and protector, Kalbhairav. Located 6 kms away from the main city of Mahabaleshwar, it is also popularly referred to as Mahabali and is visited by people of all faiths, out of reverence and curiosity.
